Navigating your Nervous System for a Healthier, vibrant Life

Metabolism Woman

The nervous system is like the body's communication network, made up of nerves and cells that send signals everywhere. These signals, often like electrical messages, travel around, helping different parts of the body work together and respond to what's happening around you.

WHAT IS THE
NERVOUS SYSTEM?

Imagine this nervous system as the boss in charge, overseeing everything from basic reflexes to complex thoughts.

It's got two main departments: the central nervous system (that's the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (a bunch of nerves reaching out to the rest of your body).

It's like the wiring system of you body, making sure information gets to where it needs to go so you can move, think, and react to the world.

TWO TYPES OF NERVOUS SYSTEM:

Now, there's a special team within this system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS), divided into two groups: the "go, go, go" team (sympathetic nervous system  or EXCITED nervous system) and the "chill out" team (parasympathetic nervous system or PASSIVE nervous system).

The Excited Nervous System, the team that shouts, "Let's go!" When stress or danger pops up, this team kicks in. It makes your heart beat faster, widens your eyes, and gets your body ready for action—it's basically your body's alarm system.

On the flip side, the passive Nervous System is the team that says, "Take it easy." This team helps you relax and recover during calm times. It slows down your heart rate, constricts your pupils, and supports regular body functions—it's like your body's rest and repair crew.

These terms come from a book by Frank Suarez called "The Power of Your Metabolism." He noticed that some people have more of the "go, go, go" team, while others have more of the "chill out" team.

It was discovered that some types of food are better depending on the type of nervous system you have.

My Nervous system

Knowing that Inside my body, there's a dynamic nervous system that significantly impacts my daily experiences is mind blowing.

Understanding my "team" within this system is like having a practical guide for making informed food choices. In my case, I lean more towards the "excited" type.

This means I should focus on consuming plenty of vegetables and opting for white meats like chicken, turkey, and fish.

On the other hand, those who lean towards the "passive" type might find red meat and fats to be more suitable for their nutritional needs.

How to know if you have an excited or passive nervous system?

Maintaining a balance between these two teams is crucial for overall health. When stress occurs, the "go, go, go" team takes charge, revving up my system. Once the stress subsides, the "chill out" team steps in, helping me relax and recover.

To determine which team dominates, Frank Suarez suggests answering five questions. If you respond with a yes to any, you are more of the "excited" type. If you answer no to all, you  align more with the "passive" type.

Here are the questions:

1- Do you struggle to digest red meat or does it feel heavy in your stomach?

2- Does fatty food, like pork or chops, upset your stomach?

3- Is it tough for you to digest food if you eat late at night?

4- Does eating late at night interfere with your sleep?

5- Do you have a light sleep and wake up easily?

For me, it was clear because I answered positively to the last three questions. This signaled that I have a more dominant "excited" nervous system.

Understanding my team isn't just about managing weight; it's about feeling good and maintaining overall health. Knowing how my body reacts to food is like having a practical tool for my well-being.

It's a practical understanding, and by deciphering my body's type, I unlocked the key to a healthier, more vibrant life.

To sum it up, exploring how our nervous system works and recognizing whether we're more on the active or laid-back side helps us make better food choices and keep ourselves healthy. Figuring out our team, as suggested by Frank Suarez's simple questions, gives us clues about the type of foods that suit us best.

Whether we lean towards being more excited or passive is not just about our eating habits but also affects our overall well-being. The "go, go, go" team steps in during stress, while the "chill out" team helps us recover. Striking a balance between these teams is crucial for staying healthy.

Knowing our body's reactions to food isn't just about managing weight; it's like having a handy tool to guide us towards feeling good and being healthy. It's an ongoing journey of understanding ourselves, making choices that match what our body needs, and ultimately, living a healthier and more vibrant life. So, by getting the hang of this practical understanding of our nervous system, we unlock the key to taking better care of ourselves every day.
